Almonds are a source of essential nutrients such as protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals, making them a nutritious choice for a healthy lifestyle. They are perfect to enjoy on their own, add them to salads or use them as an ingredient in various recipes.
Tradition and benefits
Almonds are oil seeds rich in beneficial properties. They are the fruit of the almond tree, a plant that belongs to the Rosaceae family of Asian origin that blooms from January to March. For this reason, in Christian and Jewish tradition it is considered a symbol of birth. The best time to enjoy fresh almonds is in fact spring. Introduced to Sicily by the Phoenicians from Greece, they soon spread to France, Spain and almost all Mediterranean countries.
The almond is recognized as a typical product of Sicily and is included among the agri-food products of the Italian tradition.
Among the benefits of almonds we find the fact that they contain little water and many fats, most of which are unsaturated – the so-called good fats. They have no cholesterol and are highly digestible. They contain essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as omega 6. Their protein intake makes them perfect for both diets and a vegan diet. Thanks to their energy boost they are also excellent before a sporting activity. Moderate consumption is recommended: the daily dose should not exceed 30 grams.
Almonds also contain some vitamins – such as vitamin E, D and those of group B -, copper, zinc, phosphorus, calcium, mineral salts – such as magnesium – and fibre. Thanks to the high quantities of iron, almonds are an excellent remedy against anemia. They are lactose and gluten free. They have strong positive effects on those suffering from type 2 diabetes, improving insulin sensitivity.
How to store salted and toasted almonds
Salted toasted almonds must be stored in an airtight jar or in a paper bag and then placed in the refrigerator. For long-term storage, an isolated, dry place is recommended.
